Popping Bubbles (slightly sarcastic and perhaps should be under the "Soapbox" label)

Do you ever think about doing crazy things when people are talking to you? I’m going to shoot myself in the foot here by even talking about this but sometimes when someone is talking to me (mostly serious conversations, especially in interviews) I think stuff like “what if I throw up all over them right now?” or “what if I just start screaming?” That is how I feel when I talk politics with people too, when they get really uptight and angry… it’s so funny, I can’t even think about what they are saying, but my face stays straight. If there’s one thing I have learned, it’s that people on a soapbox don’t like being laughed at. I know. I hate it when it happens to me. I’m on a great rant about something and then it’s like POOF! Let’s pop your bubble.

I came across the verse the other day, “Respect those in Authority”… yada yada. So my thought was: How come a lot of the same people, my friends, that support Obama and venomously defend him and his policies- especially on real and perceived racism (which, has been sickening realizing how NOT progressive we are) are the same people BASHING Bush? It’s so annoying. What they say about Bush is just as bad, and sometimes worse than what has been said about Obama that is so offensive to them. It’s not hard to pick on Bush now, it’s almost too easy, like picking on the handicapped kid in school. “Well, that was a little not nice, Heidi, now you are being hypocritical”, you say. Yeah, sorry about that. But none the less it’s annoying. Don’t expect others to stop what they are doing that is so offensive until you stop doing the exact same thing that is offensive to them. Isn’t there are verse about a log? in your eye?

I’m a registered Independent. I like Obama. I heard him speaking today on CNN and I though “There’s a nice guy. Very compassionate.” Then I realized what I thought. I do not know him. What a man says, especially in politics, doesn’t really let us know WHO HE IS. We get to know the heart of his speech writer perhaps. I don’t believe in him. For that matter, I believe less in John McCain. Just what I want: Another old white guy. But when I hear him (Obama) speak I fall under some sort of spell. I want to believe in him. I do. But I can’t, I don’t think he is the answer. I don’t think there is an answer. (This is too easy, I set myself up her, I have to say it!) I think Jesus is the answer! OK, OK, now that came across really religiously sarcastic which is even less funny than bad political humor. But I mean it, I do think “Jesus is the answer”, I just would never phrase it like that. How could real belief in Jesus change the face of how we perceive politics? Not just our conservative-for some of us- upbringing, but real hard core TRUTH about what is right and wrong? A lot of Jesus’ teachings come across to me… dare I say it out loud?….democratic. (Collective Gasp!)

Since I hate politics and hold Obama out like an ex-boyfriend who I still secretly like, I have to look at the issues. For me. What is important to me? No really… I’ve been in the baby game for the last 2 years, what is important to me now. My more into-politics friends start talking about foreign policy, the environment, NOT drilling in ANWAR, alternative fuels… Why dear God did I have a child???? This is depressing. The Bush bashers scream in one ear how he has destroyed the country while Glen Beck yells about Obama being a secret Arab in the other ear. I find myself overwhelmed with lack of information, general ignorance about both candidates, prejudices toward and against each nomination (both with good clear logic) in my own family, and my own moral compass which is spinning all around in circles. I fear the future, want to trust in God, and debate bringing another child into … this.

Baby, Baby, Baby, my thoughts, emotions, and heart go back to my child. My friends children, children that aren’t born. Children that won’t be born. That ah-ha! moment. Obama is for partial birth abortion. I’ve heard… this is a complete rumor… I hate repeating it… I need to google this further… that he wants to extend abortions to killing babies that have survived abortions and are still living outside of their mothers. No, that can’t be true. But partial-birth Abortions are bad enough, I think, even without my following, doubtfully true statement. I have enough information for myself. I’m not going to be intimidated by people who say.. “Oh yes. I see your point.” All the while NOT really seeing it, “I’m just going to look at ALL the issues, then decide.” Because I’m an ignorant mom who is too emotional about politics. And I am. And I don’t care. I never got the tragedy of abortion until now, and it’s haunting me.

I don’t think the Washington Post is conservative as I’m aware. The article seems pretty factual. Scroll down a few paragraphs to the one about infants left alive mistakenly.

There are a lot of other articles about this topic and if you find that I’m wrong about this please send me an e-mail!

Love politics! It is such a hard topic to talk about and people can be so offended by one thing and impassioned by another.

I found all of your points very interesting and read the article too. Gerson is a former speech writer for the current administration. I’ve always liked his writing style. Don’t know that abortion is the top issue for me in the campaign, but Obama’s stance on it worries me.

As for the election, I am not inspired by McCain, but the pessimism of Obama about our country and, I think, the looming foreign policy issues ahead make me concerned that Obama could win.

OK, I’ll quit since I am rambling. I could go on and on, but I think we may be on the same page. 😉

It is too early for this ignorant mom to talk politics . . .however, you made some valid points, and I love how you write!

FYI: I have been leaning more towards Obama and less towards McCain (but don’t tell mom, I will be cut out of my inheritance!) LOL Seriously, I still have NO idea who I will vote for . . .

    Maybe HEIDI CLARK for PREZ!!

Unfortunately bashing knows no party or candidate. Being a closet non-republican in college, I had so sit and listen to a lot of it and somehow keep my mouth shut. Not fun. But bashing is bashing and is never good.

I actually hate talking about politics (b/c of my 1st comment), but I will say that it is hard to get a straight answer from an opinion piece from any newspaper.
You will not agree with Obama on abortion. But as far as PBA’s go, he actually is for the state’s right to ban them. He didn’t vote for the ban in that particular bill (and actually didn’t vote against it either, but that’s a different story) b/c it did nothing to protect the health of the mother.

Exactly Sarah, I never know what information is just plain information and not tainted by some parties’ opinion! (and I’m sorry your were force fed republican!!)

OK, I lied. I LOVE talking politics, just not with people that can’t talk reasonably. :) I love hearing people’s opinions because it helps shape my own ideas. I get excited when people get excited over something they really believe in. Thanks for the positive posts, I was expecting a bit more negative response actually. I’m very open to information, I don’t have time to do all the research that I’d like to do so the more information you have the better for me.

I enjoy talking politics but like you get really frustrated with people who get mad because my opinion differ from theirs. Ronald Reagan was such Godly president and he was quoted saying in
    April 26, 1982
“I believe standing up for America also means standing up for the God who has so blessed this land. We’ve strayed so far, it may be later than we think. There’s a hunger in our land to see traditional values reflected in public policy again.
To those who cite the first amendment as reason for excluding God from more and more of our institutions and everyday life, may I just point out, the first amendment of the Constitution was not written to protect the people of this country from religious values—it was written to protect religious values from government tyranny.”
I feel like as christians we should look at a candidates view on the morality issue in our country more than the economic values. During these days its awfully hard not to be extremely concerned about foreign policy, the war,and national debt, but in my opinion our true concerns should be our countries values and most importantly the value we as a country put on human life. So I’m definitly not crazy about McCain but Obama doesn’t win my vote.

If you can’t tell this is my soapbox : )

I’ll throw this out there just to show that we can all have differing opinions on this topic for the same reason.
Morality and valuing human life for me means just that, making moral choices that value the entire human life. Unfortunately for voters, candidates who do a good job with morality and valuing human life before babies are born, have traditionally done a pretty pathetic job at policies valuing human life after babies are born. And the exact opposite is true too. Those who have policies that value human life after birth, do a pathetic job at it before babies are born.
So while I know it’s not the popular opinion for this post, I do have to be one of those that looks at “all the issues” as far as valuing human life goes, and can’t let abortion be my deal breaker or deal winner. But I’m so thankful that deep down we all have the same reasoning.
