top 10 list of why Austin is the best town ever

I haven’t the time to adequately post about my trip to Austin, TX on the week eve of my big move. and since I rarely deprive you, oh my readers, of a solid posting, I feel you won’t hold this little deviation against me. So, here is the top ten reasons I love Austin and what made my trip awesome.

10. no child or husband. Although at first glance, you may be thinking, “oh how mean Heidi is to talk of her dear spouse and heir in this manner!” you have to understand how much more I appreciate them today than I did a week ago.

9. the Texas clouds. Now you are thinking “really? the clouds? you must be really exhausted and looking for something to say to fill up these numbers quickly so you can jump in the shower and let the warm water beat out the soreness and pain from moving all days and carrying things heavier than you should and go to bed.” and I’m just like… maybe. but the sky is BLUE BLUE with puffy white cotton balls. and it’s jut huge. everything is bigger in Texas, ya’ll.

8. meeting this crazy guy that had wanted Esther to call if she was in town (who had met her mom at a conference) and having him totally disregard everything we had wanted to do for the evening. We ended up taking a 2 hour tour of Austin at night, not seeing Balmorrel at Stubbs, missing food at Treadgills, only taking to Esther who he was enamored with which made it very awkward, eating gingerbread pancakes at 11 pm (the only good thing he did), going by the Spider Room which was cool but we only just walked through, inviting himself along on our kayaking trip the next day and FINALLY making us go by his house when we asked to go home which was “just a minute away” which was in fact closer to 15 minutes away… Yeah. This guy could have had his own top 10 list on his own…

7. Kayaking on Lake Austin with the downtown skyline visible above the lush trees lining the river turned lake. (Crazy guy had been dis-invited)

6. Sunbathing and a dip in the Barton Springs pool. Yes, a city pool in the middle of downtown that was SPRING FED and had a natural shape to it, only supplemented by some concrete to better shape it. Both ends were dammed off and you could see the skyline. Google it- I’m not doing it justice.

5. Yeah. These next couple of ones will be about food. So, waiting in the rain for these delicious chicken and goat cheese, fire roasted vegetables, and a lemon curd with blueberry crepes at Flip Happy Crepes, the best in town. ohmydearjosephandmary. I have too many postings here so I have to add now the number one cupcake place, Hey Cupcake! where we shared a chocolate cupcake with chocolate butter cream icing. really. Do I even have to say more?

4. Eating the best chicken tacos and drinking the best margaritas outside, at Gueros, at night, with fans blowing and chips going. I mean the word “best” like how you may think it would be used in the traditional sense. Like, the BEST EVER. EVER ever.

3. Eating at another number one taco place in Austin. (Dang it I can’t remember the name!) The fried avocado one was AMAZING and PERFECT! We finished off the meal at the trailor next door, Holy Cacao, where they had absolute, rich, delightful decadence on a stick. What? you say. CAKE with icing rolled up into a ball and dipped in chocolate. Oh, and cake shakes. Divinity.

2. Eating breakfast at the number one breakfast taco place, Juan in a Million. Fresh, home-made tortillas piled high with eggs, cheese, potatoes, yummy spices, and other deliciousity that I’m forgetting for SHAME. We got it to go and ate it in a McDonalds with a bag of small fries hiding our food perfection. Our “ummmmming” and “aweing” should have tipped off the other patrons that we were NOT, in fact, eating McDonalds food.

1. dah dah dah dah! and number one is simply hanging with my BFF. Yes, I just delved into childish elementary style acronyms, but really, me and Es are going on 24 years together!

0. OK, I know technically “0” isn’t a number and I already had my #1, but I just had to say it was also the EXPERIENCE. There are so many other great and glorious things that we did and I ate that aren’t getting mentioned. I may do an addendum to this sometime, hope you enjoyed!

My mouth is watering, nothing can beat good tex-mex! And I cracked up at number 8, can we say creepy? We’re still hoping for Christmas with donna so now you can be our Austin tour guide :)

  • Heidi

when I said “week eve” I was meaning that I went to Austin the week before I was actually moving, but it came across, I feel, like I was blogging on the week-eve of my move, which isn’t true, I was blogging on the day-eve.

PS Katy, I love your hat!!!

  • Kim

Now I’m not going to be able to stop thinking about all that yummy food. I don’t know which sounded better-fried avacado or the crepe. My mouth is literally watering. I’m such a dork. You are so lucky. When I go out of town, I tend to find the crappy restaurants.

  • Jana

I googled that pool. That is SWEET! And now I’m hungry.

  • Esther Joy

The other “best” taco place is Torchy’s. We ate at the branch in the South Austin Trailer Park called “Izzoz Tacos”… mmmm fried avocado. I want some NOW!

Oh, and the chicken-fajita tacos, chips, margaritas and fans were actually at Polvos. Had to clear that up ’cause the food and margs at Guero’s were nothin’ to write home about. It is a great outdoor happy hour tho!

Best trip ever with my BFF and I seriously want to move there.

PS Katy I love your hat too!
