I was wrong, I’m sorry & I love you… {New Music Release by Derek Webb}

Disclosure: I was not paid to write this post, I’ve been a fan of Derek’s (see how I dropped the Webb? very informal because we’re friends… kinda… ok, it’s completely one sided) since the mid 1990’s when Caedmon’s Call came out with their first album. I actually met Derek a few times during that time period- back when he looked like this:

(anti-climatic much- YOU try to find a picture of him with short spiky hair… )

As a wanna be angst filled teenager I found myself drawn more and more to certain Caedmon’s Call songs and in true high school form I would pour through the cd booklets and read lyrics, noticing my favorite songs were all Derek Webb’s songs. I then loved the Guild albums, the Bebo songs and the raw authenticity in his songs that seemed to be missing from a lot of other Christian musicians at the time.

As he progressed through the years I found myself drawn to his “She Must and Shall Go Free” album but subsequent albums a little less. It’s not that they were any less brilliant, they just weren’t where I was at the time spiritually or emotionally and didn’t resonate as deeply.

Fast forward to this July- earlier this month, while on Twitter I saw someone RT’d a link to put in an application for his social team to help support his new album release. Thoughts, feelings, excitement flooded through me and I remember years ago the grassroots support I had given Caedmom’s Call and Derek Webb… When I heard the title of his new album and tour name I got shivers. I had to join.

I was Wrong, I’m Sorry and I Love You

I knew I’d love it and after pouring over the entire album multiple times, (I got a pre-release copy to review) I found that I was right. Where “She Must and Shall Go Free” was, to me, about true salvation and our depravity and need of Christ as well as frustration with the church that I felt, this album as described by him as the true sequel to it, is about redemption and reconciliation. Stay tuned- I’ll do a complete album review in the next month!

So here today- is a link to his new single from his thus titled album, I was Wrong, I’m Sorry and I Love You. I really can’t say enough how much I love it. It’s a happy sorrow, an embrace of pain and the way his confession challenges me is inspiring.  I understand what he is saying so deeply.  Lines like, “I welcome everyone/but give them nothing when they arrive” and “or else build a house/ with no way to come inside” give me goosebumps. I need to open up to people again.

I hope you enjoy it as much as me! Share it, talk about it, and let me know what you think of it, I’d love to have some discussions about it here! Pre-Order his album today and experience the rest of it.
